A board foot (abbreviated as bd ft) is a unit used to measure the volume of a piece of wood in terms of feet. Unlike square feet, which measures the area of a material in two dimensions, and linear feet, which measures the length, board feet considers the entire volume of the wood, factoring in its length, width, and thickness.
The foot is a US customary and imperial unit of length. Feet can be abbreviated as ft; for example, 1 foot can be written as 1 ft.
Lumberyard operators say one of the biggest challenges new customers face is in understanding the board foot—the basic unit of measurement for roughsawn stock. The board foot (144 cubic in.) is confusing because it measures a board’s volume, not its length. This means that a piece of stock 1 ft. long can contain more than 1 board foot of material.
To calculate board feet, multiply the thickness, width, and length of the board (all in inches) and then divide the product by 144.
The formula to calculate board footage is (thickness × width × length) ÷ 144. Ensure that all measurements are in inches before dividing by 144.
If the length is in feet, you can still calculate the board footage by multiplying the thickness of the board (in inches) by the width (in inches) and the length (in feet), then dividing the result by 12.
